Delhi-born wellness evangelist—not to mention best-selling author, Sirius radio show host, and advisor to Demi Moore and Bill Clinton—Deepak Chopra opened a right-coast companion to his California-based Chopra Center in 2005 underneath pal Vikram Chatwal's colorful Dream hotel. Entering the center’s boutique, visitors are met by a twenty-two-foot-high Buddha fresco, which keeps wide-eyed watch over dosha-balancing Abhy oils and Satwa sandalwood incense. Downstairs in the 7,000-square-foot Ayurveda haven, a labyrinth of curving hallways leads to a rosewood-floored yoga studio, where Hatha-based sessions incorporate Chopra’s "Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga;” a meditation chamber; seven treatment rooms; and a mud room outfitted like a haute havali with stylized arches and glimmering tile. Robed clients recline on crimson and tangerine floor cushions in the circular waiting area, filling out Ayurveda’s signature detailed questionnaires. Though the center offers free daily meditation sessions and bi-monthly spirit-rehabbing Perfect Health workshops, the West Coast branch's more intense panchakarma cleansing has yet to percolate here, so most guests stick to à la carte spa-ing. Every service is based on the subcontinent’s 5,000-year-old medicinal system, from the 80-minute, toxin-flushing Vishesh deep-tissue treatment to the lil pada (foot) massages. Warm, pitta-calming oils flow gently over the forehead during the Shirodara treatment; the tranquilizing effect may nudge open a sleepy third eye.
