Profile

Exclusive and elusive Japanese streetwear icon and BAPE founder Nigo put a revolving display in the front window to show off the candy-colored, patent leather kicks that have built his BAPE empire up to more than 30 stores in London, Hong Kong, and Beijing as well as a BAPE cafe and barber shop in Japan. With a mostly white-and-glass minimalist interior, the merch in the bi-level store is another story—the brand's instantly recognizable camo covers everything from beach towels and wallets to Bearbrick toys and umbrellas. In addition to the camo, goods and clothing with the star-and-lightning bolt and Baby Milo symbols have become so in demand that counterfeit BAPE goods now clog Canal Street and the Internet. The NYC store offers patrons a chance to get the limited-edition items in a legit fashion—but, of course, at a price. Logo-emblazoned T-shirts start at $73 and hoodie prices can soar to $400. But shelling out is the point if you want to make folks go ape crazy with envy.
