Bonpoint

Profile
The timeworn display tables at this stylish boutique look like furniture you'd see in a country house in the South of France—a fitting touch, since the children's clothing for sale looks like it’s been imported straight from streets of Paris. Shelves are stuffed full of dressy girls' blouses and skirts in faded pinks and purples: while the boys' clothes are all business: blazers and slacks in formal patterns. The staff knows all of the regular Mommies and keeps them up to date on what's in stock. For a lucky child, that might mean a simple wool sweater or perhaps one of the T-shirts, which retain a degree of playfulness. (One shirt, emblazoned with the phrase, "I'm a busy girl," testifies to the work ethic of a Manhattan private school child.) Considering how quickly kids will outgrow these pricey items, Bonpoint probably isn’t the place to stock up on everyday clothes. But for special occasions, it might be just the trick. The social set swears by the party frocks and sharp boiled-wool jackets and lightweight suits.
