Profile
The title of "cake designer" hardly does Colette Peters justice. More accurately, this former Tiffany designer is a sculptor who just happens to work in flour and sugar. Peters, who has published five books about cake decorating, can custom-create a cake that looks like anything you could possibly imagine. The sugar flowers that grace her elegant wedding cakes—curving calla lilies, full-blown peonies, tiger lilies dusted with tiny spots—could fool a florist. Her building cakes—she's done one in the shape of the Flatiron building, another that recreates Oz's Emerald City, and yet another resembling a White Castle restaurant—look like architects' scale models covered in icing. Her asymmetrically tiered crooked cakes—which can be made in a dozen different flavors—have been famous ever since she baked her first one for a Tiffany fete in 1985. Celebrities who need special party desserts know that Peters is the one to call; when Hillary Clinton's book, Living History sold a million copies last year, she called Peters for a very special favor. Tucker Carlson had told Hillary that if her book sold a million, he'd eat his shoe; so the night before Hillary's celebratory party, Peters worked all night to create a cake in the shape of a burnished brown wingtip. "I made it a right wingtip," Peters remembers. "That was my own idea."
