In 1899, Rochester-based partners Jacob Freeman and Jeremiah Hickey had visions of creating a classic menswear line for financial-district types; they wanted their line to incorporate both the value of ready-to-wear and the fit of made-to-measure. Today, the duo’s Fifth Avenue flagship is greatly informed by this dual mission. While browsing wool and twill suits, cashmere sweaters, silk ties, and tailored shirts, you’ll quickly learn that Hickey’s is no slave to fashion; customers here couldn’t care less about what GQ has declared “in” for the season. These guys just want a well-fitting, no-nonsense replacement for their nine-to-five suit, or maybe an update for their weekend-in-Westchester chinos. For the golfer who would prefer not to look like an extra from Caddyshack, the Bobby Jones Collection offers traditional putting jackets, polo knits, and trousers appropriate for the clubhouse. Much younger men (a.k.a. boys) are introduced to the world of pinstripes and topcoats via private school–style blazers and bar mitzvah–ready suits. — Chanize Thorpe
