Profile
The shirt’s the thing at this Soho boutique specializing in custom-made menswear for the young and well-funded. The relaxed space smells faintly of leather and exudes a subtle masculinity as a reel-to-reel player against one wall checks any bespoke pretension with a playful wink. Spare decoration and comfortable seating set the stage for customers perusing heavy binders and wooden boxes exploding with fabric samples. SSV prides itself on these elegant, colorful textiles, the names of which are as unique as the patterns (“Immigrant Punk,” “Pontius Pilate,” and “Can't Get Used to Losing You,” for instance). Shirts, as well as suits, sport coats, and tuxedos, can be purchased off the rack and fitted by an in-house tailor within weeks. Custom jobs—the bread and beurre of SSV—are sent overseas for cutting and basting, a process that takes at least a month. Tucked neatly about the store are still more accoutrements—ties, cuff links, boxers, pajamas, and shoes. A sophisticated selection of women’s blouses and blazers are all made with the same obsessive attention to detail.
