  World Trade Center Memorial
- Kam Tai New York

My proposal for the World Trade Center Memorial will be comprised of 2 structures, rising up from the original footprints of the WTC. Each will gradually rise upward, spiraling one around the other, emulating the paths the rescuers took to reach the people trapped in the inferno. The effect will be that of them embracing and watching over each other, like those present on 9/11.

The structures would be constructed of similar metal used in the construction of the World Trade Center. They would sit atop a granite concrete base that was the original footprint of each of the towers. The structures would climb upward where their apexes (points, tips?) could achieve the actual height and location that each tower was attacked. They would take on unique and different shapes when viewed from different vantage points around the memorial.

Bronze statues of 9/11 rescuers facing terrorism with heroism and defiance would grace the top of each structure, with the uppermost statues thrusting American flags proudly into the sky. Statues will be 2 to 3 times larger than life size at ground level, then increase in size as they struggle heroically to the top so they can be seen from below.

The names of rescuers who gave their lives that day would be engraved on the outer walls while the names of the civilians who perished would be engraved on the inner walls. The interstitial space that is created from the two intertwining structures will be devoid of any physical element except for an eternal flame or other source of light. That light will illuminate and reflect off the internal walls to emit a beautiful glow at night.

Around the memorial in concentric circles would be two 30-40 story office buildings with glass observation decks reinforcing the spiraling motion of the structures and creating a separation from the busy downtown streets.
