Services: Best Rug & Carpet Cleaners

To facilitate one-stop shopping, Clean Bright Process (the plant is on Long Island, but calls are taken locally at 283-6400) does both broadloom and area rugs. Of course, wall-to-wall carpeting is done on-site (45 cents per square foot). While the firm will clean Oriental carpets and other types of area rugs on location (starting at $1.25 per square foot), these are generally better served by a trip to the plant, where more sophisticated equipment is available. Generally, at the plant prices start at about $1.75 per square foot. Pickup and delivery are included.

For extremely precious carpets that might need some repair work, Restoration By Costikyan (plant in Long Island City, but pickups arranged through 718-786-9684 or 800-247-7847) gets very high marks from Alexa Hampton, president of Mark Hampton, Inc. "We use them for everything related to rugs, for both cleaning and restoring," she says. "For the kinds of carpets our clients own, you cannot just call anybody." Cleaning a typical nine-by-twelve-foot Oriental carpet runs about $350 to $400; a more delicate carpet, like an Aubusson, costs about $500, a silk rug between $500 and $600. The company can do edge repairs -- fringing and binding, patching and reweaving.
