Little Charlie's Clam Bar
19 Kenmare St. between Elizabeth St. and Bowery
212-431-6443

Italian, Seafood
Something's always on fire at Little Charlie's, but don't worry: it's the hot sauce, not the kitchen. The steady stream of New York's Bravest going in and out the front door comes from nearby Engine 9, a.k.a. the Chinatown Dragonfighters, who favor the foot-long, overstuffed heroes ($10). Besides the hefty meatball sub, other favorites include eggplant parmigiana ($10.50), linguini in red or white clam sauce ($13.50), sautéed shrimp and calamari with hot peppers ($11.50), chicken cacciatore ($12.50) and the rigatoni alla putanesca ($12.50). Charlie's is particularly revered for its homemade sauces but a warning—even the Dragonfighters admit that they can't handle the hot stuff. Unless you've got a Teflon tongue, save yourself some pain and ask for medium or mild.

Forget everything you thought you knew about nature's most ubiquitous grain. Once you've tasted Rice's moist green eponymous dish infused with cilantro, parsley and spinach, or the sticky and tender Thai black rice steamed in coconut milk (both $2.50 for small, $3.50 for large), you'll never eat Uncle Ben's again. If complex carbs aren't your thing, try the delicious satay ($5 for small, $9 for large) with your choice of marinated shrimp, chicken or tofu, or the tea-smoked salmon salad on mixed greens with ginger hoisin vinaigrette ($8). There are also a plethora of enticing fusion specialties such as Thai coconut curry shrimp ($6.50 for small, $10.50 for large).
