This Dutch store is a lot more relaxed than many of its tony neighbors. Children build with colorful blocks while European pop music plays. The clothes and accessories for sizes infant to women’s 14 are similarly lighthearted—fairy stretch tops ($50) and kaleidoscope print pants (from $80).

Clothes here are fairly durable and cost next to nothing. Onesies are $10.50–$12.50 for a three-pack. They’ve got loads of toddlers’ and kids’ play clothes, too. Tees start at $7.50; girls’ pajamas, $12.50.

This Upper East Side company specializes in classic Jackie O.-style dresses for the preteen set. Before choosing, girls try on various styles and specify colors and frills. All dresses are made from Tricotine, a wrinkle-free wool fabric that works in all seasons.

This outdoorsy outfitter is best known for its weatherproof jackets, but environmentally conscious parents treasure its organic cotton, fleece, and polyester infants’ and kids’ garments. Star of this year’s season is a silkweight coupling baby set made of Capilene, a polyester exclusive to Patagonia ($38). Sizes range from newborn to 14.

This cluttered West Village shop is full of clothes made to play in: lots of stuff with fringes and beads, tiaras, and bib overalls ($50). Don’t be surprised if the salespeople remember your child’s name. Sizes newborn to 16.

Come here for elegant clothing designed just for boys. The high-end sensibility delivers great cashmere cable sweaters for $150, khakis for $30 to $50, navy blazers for $150, and Italian silk ties for $65. Not recommended for romping in the playground.

Nothing’s softer than a baby’s bottom—except for Petit Bateau’s cotton clothes for newborns. They offer a complete baby collection, including layettes, clothing, blankets, booties, and accessories—lots of terry, too. Children, preppy teens, and smaller moms can’t get enough of the famed T-shirts. There are also velvet dresses that you can layer on top of a long-sleeve T-shirt ($73–$88) and cargo pants for babies and boys ($75–$107).

Although there’s a small selection at Barneys, it’s worth a trek to Westchester (or a foray into online shopping) to browse the full line of designer Noelle Tutenuit’s sweet selection of clothes. Fun stuff like pyschedelic hoodies ($56) with matching pants ($33) can be combined with a sleeveless printed top ($49)—all in pink. Sizes infant to 14.

Celebrities and locals love the beachy atmosphere and personalized attention they get from the staff here. The well-edited selection consists of an eclectic mix of known names like Zutano and Cacharel (blazers are $200), plus indie labels like Imps & Elves and No Added Sugar (tees that say “Future Supermodel” are $25). Sizes from newborn to 6.

As the name implies, these shops have everything a parent could need: tons of kids’ furniture, school supplies, and sturdy, practical clothing from OshKosh, Carter’s, and Zutano ($1.99– $100), in sizes 0 to 24 months. Carter’s onesies are $8.99 for a three-pack, OshKosh overalls are from $10, and Zutano printed shirts are from $8.
