Best Lunch-Hour Workout

  • Express Train at Equinox

    Multiple locations equinoxfitness.com

Often, a shortened class simply means fewer reps and lower intensity. Not so in Express Train, currently taught at three Equinox locations, where you get around the lack of time by executing everything simultaneously. Picture yourself hovering in a squat position (quads and glutes) while holding dumbbells, then pulling your elbows toward the ceiling in a rowing motion (lats, rhomboids); with elbows suspended, you straighten you arms (triceps) again and again (cardio). There are no breaks. While you struggle to maintain a taut plank position—and consider bending your knees or arching your back to relieve the pressure—eagle-eyed instructor Jeffrey Scott is continually monitoring the room to ensure you’re always correctly positioned for maximum burn. The pain in your abs will make you happy the class isn’t any longer.
