603 Bushwick Ave., nr. Jefferson St., Bushwick; silentbarn.org
It was a sad day in July 2011 when the city ordered the inhabitants of Silent Barn to vacate their Wyckoff Avenue digs. Two years and a $40,000 Kickstarter campaign later and the Barn, known for its wild-and-sweaty all-ages concerts and dance parties, has found a new home in Bushwick—one that’s legally zoned as both a residence and community space. Past the unmarked door and “Canned Ham” trailer, a mini-B&B for visiting bands, lies the main house, where young musicians set up shop nearly every night of the week. There are plans to open a recording studio and salvaged-materials emporium within the compound, and upstairs apartments house die-hard Silent Barners—people who no doubt thrive on less than eight hours of sleep.
