Heritagewear is one glutted genre, and quality competitors (Hickoree’s Floor Two, I.D., Goose Barnacle) abound. But the act of shopping for painstakingly wrought menswear at H.W. Carter—an industrial-age overalls brand recently relaunched under the creative direction of British designer Greg Chapman—is elevated by its richly conceived 1,800-square-foot space. Dark-wood paneling and Art Nouveau–style brass lighting fixtures frame neat rows of the brand’s homespun Cone Mills–fabric jeans ($195), chalk-stripe Woolrich-milled sack coats ($425), and lace-up leather work boots ($715). Friendly staff, exceptional sales, and a plethora of complementary brands (Engineered Garments, Gitman Bros., Grenson, Japan’s South 2 West 8) round out the selection.
