He studied at Parsons School of Design in New York, and upon graduation worked for design powerhouses such as Anne Klein, TSE, Calvin Klein and Cerruti. He won Best New Designer from the VH1 Fashion Awards in 1997 and a CFDA Perry Ellis Award in 1998 and was awarded Hispanic Designer of the Year 1997, an honor that has also gone to such designers as Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera. Rodriguez has been honored for the past two years by the CFDA Awards: he won the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award in both 2002 and 2003. He became a household name after designing Carolyn Bessette's wedding dress for her marriage to John F. Kennedy, Jr.
