Stores and services worth investigating, even if you don’t buy anything.

HOME

New Arrival: CB2
Where: 451 Broadway, nr. Grand St.; no phone yet
Selling Points: Come November, budget-conscious design addicts will no longer have to wait for their catalogues from CB2, the trimmer, glossier, and more modern offshoot of Crate & Barrel. The new, large Soho store lets shoppers actually test out the clean-lined sofas (about $1000) and floor lamp ($99.95, pictured here), all priced much more affordably than elsewhere in the neighborhood.
When: November

New Arrival: Dekar
Where: Oriental Lamp Shade Company, 816 Lexington Ave., nr. 63rd St.; 212-832-8190
Selling Points: The handmade lampshades by Dekar, a New York design outfit, were once made to order only for tasteful insiders (like Anna Wintour). Starting September 4, the company’s designs will be sold ready-made at Oriental Lamp Shade Company. Some are adorned with a Greek-key motif (pictured, from $100), while others are slightly punk-rock—paper and linen shades spiked with brass tacks (from $160), a design inspired by vintage luggage.
When: September 4

JEWELRY

New Arrival: Chopard
Where: 709 Madison Ave., nr. 63rd St.; no phone yet
Selling Points: The Swiss brand Chopard will open a 3,000-square-foot emporium of expensive, pretty things (like the diamond and emerald collar seen here) on October 22, smack in the middle of Madison Avenue’s gold coast. In the new NYC Limited collection, those who go to benefits will find pieces (for up to $2 million) to augment their gowns, while their escorts can pick out watches (from $6,000) to celebrate another bonus.
When: October 22

WOMEN’S CLOTHES

New Arrival: Madewell
Where: 486 Broadway, nr. Broome St.; no phone yet
Selling Points: Madewell, the slightly edgier J.Crew offshoot, already had one fleeting moment here thanks to a pop-up store this March. Now it has a permanent home opening in Soho this November. Despite the brand’s prep pedigree, it has an identity all its own—the clothes are cheaper and more rock and roll, with an emphasis on denim. Check out the rail-straight cords ($69.50), wide-leg jeans ($108, pictured here), and their strong accessories collection.
When: November

MEN’S CLOTHES

New Arrival: Tim Hamilton
Where: Den, 330 E. 11th St., nr. First Ave.; 212-475-0079
Selling Points: The East Village storefront Den, an offshoot of the mini menswear emporium Odin, takes the concept of the pop-up shop to a semipermanent place. Den’s late-September guest star is Tim Hamilton, whose smart, classic men’s designs (like narrow neckties, $109, and the wool sweater, $850, pictured here) are hard to find but caught the attention of the CFDA, which nominated him this year in its new designer category.
When: Through November

SPORTS

New Arrival: CityView Racquet Club
Where: 43-34 32nd Pl., Long Island City; 718-698-3664
Selling Points: The new CityView Racquet Club in Long Island City is 80,000 square feet of tennis for the country-club set. There are seven Har-Tru courts (about $30 per person per hour), four squash courts, and semiannual clinics by the legendary pro coach Nick Bollettieri. Off the courts, members can exercise in the gym, visit the spa, linger in the lounge (pictured here), or shop for tennis gear. Memberships range from $2,200 to $4,000 per year, plus a $1,200 initiation fee that will increase upon opening.
When: October

CARS

New Arrival: Audi R8
Where: Audi Forum, 250 Park Ave., at 47th St.; 212-370-2834
Selling Points: Good thing design lovers don’t have to own something to appreciate it. There’s simple pleasure to be had admiring the 2008 Audi R8, a low-slung, mid-engined sports coupe that costs a mere $110,000. The R8 can hit 187 mph, sprints to 60 mph in just four seconds, and looks refreshingly different from the Porsche 911, the default status car in town. There are only 300 of them coming to America this year, so sightings will be rare.
