Earplugs and wine? The message may seem mixed, but after sitting through a couple of drum-pounding, guitar-ripping sets at Sin-é (pronounced shin-ay), it becomes clear that the wine-decked bar adds a folksy twist to the punk/indie rock lineup. Like its original incarnation, a former fixture on St. Marks Pl. until the early ‘90s, the focus at the reborn club is on the stage and sound system. A barebones, tucked-between-empty-garages venue, Sin-é offers mainly standing room sprinkled with a few bar stools and tables for the weak-kneed. Sin-é covers range from nothing for undiscovered local bands to $15 for special events showcasing bigger ticket indie groups. And with $3 bottles of Pabst (draft beers only go up to $5 at the strictly beer-and-wine bar), Sin-é makes for an easy-on-the-wallet underground music night. Where else can you see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for $7? And don’t forget the $1 earplugs if you plan on hearing yourself think the next morning.
