Profile

Initially, the lobby bar of the Bowery Hotel was cast as a mere precursor to the opening of the upstairs bars; then designers Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson of the Maritime Hotel made it one of the most opulent rooms in the city. Those standing on one of the expansive Persian rugs and surveying the room with its dark wooden panels carved in Art Deco style and its murky mural of old New York running along the top of the walls will be hard-pressed to choose from the assortment of velvet settees and downright regal seats (some with gargoyles carved in their backs) liberally spaced around round tables and benches. If you can’t get a perch near the vaulted sandstone fireplace, you can always plant it on a church pew or stand up at the zinc-topped bar in an adjacent room where a cabinet holds a stuffed pit bull, a bowler hat, dusty bottles, and dustier tomes. You may balk at the wall of antlers, but a good single-malt scotch served up by a knowledgeable, aproned bartender should cure all that.

Back Patio

As their other projects Waverly Inn, the Park, and La Bottega at the Maritime Hotel go to show, Goode and MacPherson know the value of fresh air, and they’ve provided plenty of it via a back patio festooned with mosaic tiles.

Guest Policy
Official policy reserves the lobby bar for people staying at the hotel and their guests. Everyone else can take their chances.
