What happens when a trio of nightlife veterans hires indie-minded fashion designer Jeremy Scott and tells him to go bananas with the space, the uniforms and the logo? A multi-level club in the Flatiron District that resembles a delightfully boozy homecoming float. Happy Valley’s 5,000 square foot space is outrageously outsized, with a retro-chic, freewheeling vibe. An installation of a giant pair of women's legs hovers beneath the DJ booth, which is actually a 12-foot disco ball where the MisShapes and other marquee names spin ultra-new material from bands like Ratatat and Bloc Party. Mirrored ceilings lend fabulous intimacy to the upstairs VIP area as shirtless waiters in tube socks and snug sport-shorts deliver bottles to leopard-print couches along the walls. The scene is remarkably eclectic: You might see a young man dressed like a bullfighter twirling in oblivious circles while a go-go dancer shakes things up to electro-pop in a neon cage above the color-block dance floor. The strict door policy (“fabulous or stand outside”) won’t please everyone, but for those who experience the merry mayhem, there’s happiness in the valley indeed.
