A few blocks away from the frenzy of Times Square is this cheap, no-frills oasis. There’s 60 years of history working here: the walls are plastered with photo collages of regulars and newspaper clippings, and a 12-foot neon sign hangs above the bar taken from the Holland Welfare Hotel, the lounge’s original parent location; the old-school cash register, positioned between bottles of Smirnoff, Jameson, and a hodgepodge of knick knacks, has been with the bar since 1944. When he’s not pouring McSorley’s, reining bartender Dr. Bill exchanges tales with the barflies and construction workers, young suits, and lost tourists.
