The cozy Mansfield Hotel isn't exactly part of the chic-boutique-hotel mania that's swept the city, but a renovation has nonetheless made it one of midtown's most pleasant smaller hotels. M Bar, the Mansfield's lounge, shares the hotel's clubbish appeal, with a wall of books imparting a library vibe and a horseshoe-shaped bar to encourage flirting (it's a hotel bar, after all). With its business clientele and subdued atmosphere, M Bar opts for straightforward, upscale bar selections; specialty cocktails would be considered declasse here. Go for a scotch and enjoy the tinkling jazz coming out of the sound system. — Matt Dobkin
