When Dana Minkin opened Gloss in 2003, she knew she didn't want a factory-like atmosphere that churned out clients by the minute. Instead, she created this intimate, white and lavender four-room retreat where the prevailing theme is star treatment—played out literally in touches like the star-embellished candelabra in the lobby and the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star facials for teens. Minkin actually allows for space between appointments to prevent clients from tripping over each other down the single hallway to the bedroom-like quarters. The mostly local clients (and occasional L.A. starlets) swear by the skin treatments: After a thorough skin analysis, estheticians blend organic fruit and vegetable facials on the spot; their microdermabrasion and Five Star amino acid treatments are more result-driven. Even better, the facialists explain each step, so there are no surprises at the cash register, and their extractions are so gentle, the standard three-day post-treatment hibernation is unnecessary. Attracting a younger crowd, the body bronzing, DHA-only tans look amazingly believable, as the clear spray naturally adjusts to suit each complexion. Vats of wax for sensitive skin make the racy Porn Star bikini design (with rhinestone appliqué) less traumatic—and popular among brides-to-be. Laser whitening performed by a licensed dentist is also on the menu.
Bridal PackageThis Upper East Side spa is unmarked from the street, and an appointment is always required. The Bridal Star package is appropriately posh: The treatment begins one year before the wedding and includes a monthly deep-pore cleansing, eye treatment, neck hydration, and aromatherapy mask. Grooms can get in on the relaxation with the men’s package.
