Profile
This turn-of-the century apartment building was repurposed as a hotel in 1996, but vestiges of its old New York character remain—not to mention a few of its residents. The lobby charms with an ornate fireplace, gold-leaf molding, oil paintings, and bookshelves overflowing with hardcover classics. The 280 rooms located upstairs are spare, clean, and affordable, ideal for large groups and international tourists who spend their stay hopping the nearby express subway to Times Square. Room rates are kept low by offering few amenities. The tiny business center includes two computers, a printer, and an ATM, while the next-door gym is little more than a mirrored room with three exercise machines. With no restaurant on site, the maître d’ sends guests around the corner to Key West Diner, which is reasonably priced and better than expected—not unlike the hotel itself.
ProsIts Victorian décor is surprisingly charming considering the hotel's low rates.
Cons
Location on the far Upper West Side is convenient to Times Square, but inconvenient if you’re looking to go to the East Side or below 14th Street.
