Profile
Built by Jackie O’s grandfather and opened in 1924 as the Shelton Towers, this 35-story, 646-room hotel may now be a Marriott, but it retains a decidedly historic feel. Gargoyles adorn the detailed exterior and the main floor’s oak paneling, marble floors, and lounge seem more suited to a private club than a hotel lobby. The rooms themselves are also old-fashioned, though complemented by a full set of contemporary amenities. Guests have access to all that the elegant East Midtown neighborhood has to offer.
ProsRitzy midtown location.
Cons
Constant traffic along Lexington Avenue can create valet service hold ups.
Claim to Fame
The Marriott East Side was once home to painter Georgia O'Keefe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Harry Houdini performed one of his great escape acts in the now-closed basement pool.
