Profile
Homey touches abound at this 50-room boutique hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. With flower boxes on the window sills, free newspapers stacked on the coffee table in the lounge and an assortment of fluffy ottomans in the common areas, the Franklin could make even Dorothy feel at home. The provincial décor is supplemented by modern amenities like plasma TVs and stainless steel bathroom sinks. However, this attempt at quaint minimalism sometimes translates into cramped rooms and unadorned walls. Guests looking for more space should opt for a Superior Room, but be assured that all quarters at The Franklin come with free high-speed Internet access and iHome clock radios. Off to one side of the lobby lies a small, unassuming reading nook stocked with Dumas, Eliot, and Dostoevsky.
Pros
Free European-style breakfast in the first floor lounge and complimentary wine and cheese hour, daily, 5 p.m.—6:30 p.m.
Cons
Views from some rooms, especially those on the lower floors, are obstructed by neighboring buildings.

The same Otis elevator has been operating in the Franklin since its inception in 1929.
