Profile

This venue is closed.

If it weren’t already so wildly popular, Cubana Café, a Brooklyn satellite of the Soho flagship, would be one of those spots you’d be torn about recommending to friends. It’s tiny, at risk of becoming overcrowded, but also unpretentious and inexpensive, so why not share the joy? The authentic Cuban food—not to mention the space’s cool pastels, retro look, and casual bistro vibe—is a magnet for Brooklyn’s twenty- and thirtysomethings, who plunk themselves down at tables for two, pushed together and pulled apart as needed by a wait staff outfitted in bright-green “¿Got Mojito?” T-shirts. Standbys like ropa vieja, pulled pork, quesadillas, and Cuban sandwiches pack the menu, alongside less trendy dishes like garlic shrimp, perfectly pink sautéed steaks, tangy jícama and chickpea salads, and egg-based breakfast dishes that are served all day. The maduros and tostones—sautéed sweet and fried green plantains—satisfy, as does the whipped sweet plantain purée. Desserts aren’t the strong suit here, but the tropical drinks more than make up for that.

Note

Reservations accepted only for groups of six or more.
