Four decades ago in Hungary, Eva Devecsery was not only an expert couturier but also a weaver, because, as she puts it, “we had to do everything . . . we didn’t even have fabric.” These days, the charming Ms. Devecsery plies the needle for a rarefied clientele. (On one visit, we heard her pick up the phone and say, “Hello, Princess”—and it wasn’t a nickname.) She presides over a team of the city’s most nimble-fingered atelier of specialists who can often turn around a quickie job, like hemming a brand-new pair of trousers or an unlined skirt ($30 and up), in a day. Spend a little time having small alterations done here, and you’re going to start thinking about that custom suit, which can run from $2,500 to $4,500—and is well worth it.
BridalDevecsery can work magic on even the most worn garments. Her sewing virtuosos will do fast turnarounds for hems, adjustments, and quick fixes. Wedding gowns start at $3,000.
