Among the flamboyant band of gay-themed shops surrounding Christopher St., Albertine couldn't be more of a glamour girl's paradise. A chorus line of 40s-inspired pumps adorn the tiny boutique's white-framed window, which resembles a dollhouse diorama. As ultra-feminine style hounds sort through the silk organza flutter-sleeved blouses and Grecian-style wrap dresses that line the shop's walls, grey-painted oak floors and two antique wooden chairs welcome weary shopping companions to rest. Owner Kyung Lee has stocked her retail space with moderate-to-upper-priced original pieces from emerging artists—from metallic clutch purses that punctuate the ethereal-hued shelves to the burnished gold pendants, jade drop earrings and lattice cut rings artfully framed for display. Although only one sales associate is usually on hand, clients can count on personalized service; the store will even make items to order, since each piece is only one or two of a kind. — Molly Noonan
