Profile

Designer Billy Reid has five eponymous boutiques throughout the South, but the opening of his Bond Street shop in October 2008 marks his first foray into the Northeast. The two-story store reflects Reid’s penchant for traditional style with a twist, featuring ceilings covered in salvaged doors from a Mississippi schoolhouse, a couch made of old church pews, antique apothecary cabinets, and ornate wall coverings. The space is dotted with one-of-a-kind estate and flea-market finds, including antique tea seats, a shadow box fitted with an old portrait, and a picture of flowers from the 1880s made entirely of human hair. This is the only location to carry Reid’s entire women’s collection, as well as his limited-edition raw-denim jeans for men that were woven on salvaged shuttle looms from an old Kentucky mill. Both the men’s and women’s collections evoke vintage details, like antique brass buttons and buckles on the popular Apron Wiggle Dress or men’s silk ties and cuff links made entirely from repurposed materials. But Reid’s clothing isn’t all about paying homage to the styles of bygone eras. Classic lines give way to funky details: The Wiggle Dress’s cotton shirting apron is removable, changing the silhouette from slim to swingy.
