Cadeau means gift en francais—though whether the gift is the bundle you’re expecting or the haute, luxury-steeped designs on view in this airy Soho boutique is an open question. It's true, you're only pregnant for nine months, but if frump factor takes over, it will feel like nine excruciating years. Mother of three and designer Emilia Fabricant developed the Barneys maternity line; in 2002, she took the concept of couture maternity and struck out on her own, with a signature collection that is all made in Italy. At Cadeau's loft-like boutique (a sister to one in LA), pregnant women who value their sense of style snap up fashionable pieces like embroidered tunic dresses, silk halter tops and stretch silk skirts. None feature the unsightly elastic panels that define department-store maternity wear, but instead have adaptable fitting systems (stretch fabrics, buttoned plackets) to accommodate your expansion and eventual, post-baby return to shapeliness. With large club chairs and leather benches set among vintage armoires and free-standing mirrors, available, moms-to-be can take a load off and sip complimentary beverages in between browsing the speciality Citizen maternity jeans and other trendy, runway-inspired items. Just for fun, Cadeau also sells the Basq line of belly creams and oils; a small house label for infants lets newborns be just as stylish as their moms.
