Profile
Though John Galliano's collections for Christian Dior may be known for over-the-top theatrics and fad-producing handbags, the fashion house's New York shop is a reminder of a legacy that's more prestige than pop; its streamlined storefront fits right in with the neighboring classic high-end boutiques—including those of Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent, and Chanel—that share its block. Shoes, sunglasses, the latest ready-to-wear, and fabulous handbags are lined up precisely against the spare white walls, patrolled by sophisticated clerks and black-suited security guards that outnumber the customers. Those who do shop here are generally disinclined to browse, heading instead for a particular pair of pumps or the fine-jewelry collection in the back room. (Costume jewelry is up front for all to peruse.) The adjacent men's store, a glossy black bowling alley of a space, is superficially more casual: Scruffy-haired sales guys who could pass for Dior models man a selection that, while slimmer than the women's, is still surprising in scope. On display are jackets, belts, watches, cologne, and even the inevitable Christian Dior iPod case.
