Profile
Chilean-born Maria Cornejo began her career as a tailor—a fact which will become quickly evident to customers browsing through her airy Soho shop. The whitewashed warehouse holds racks of handmade clothing, arranged by color and fabric and featuring both impeccable workmanship and unique style. Besides well-made basics like wool pants and gauzy camisoles, the store has rows of slinky, sexy dresses, intricate knitwear in cashmere and silk, and capes and velvet-lined coats. The store is sparse and barely decorated, and the salesgirls are unobtrusive, allowing shoppers to duck into the tiny dressing area—technically just some well-placed screens in the corner—as often as they wish. The store also doubles as Maria’s studio, where the designer and her team create new collections. Keep your eyes peeled for celebrity fans like Cameron Diaz and Marisa Tomei, who have both worn Maria’s designs on the red carpet.
