To be sure, the Juilliard Pre-College Division offers the best musical instruction for children in New York or anywhere else. But what if your young prodigy isn't willing to devote ten hours every Saturday to lessons and classes, or is intimidated by auditioning before a faculty jury (a prerequisite for Juilliard admission)? You could pony up $40-$100 an hour for a private Juilliard teacher, or you could just call the Lucy Moses School for Music and Dance. Toddlers as young as twelve months are welcomed into classes that, geared toward musical self-expression, explore song, rhythm, and movement. By age 4 or 5, kids can enroll in the school's beginner classes for piano, violin, guitar, cello, and ballet; more-advanced classes for instruments ranging from the saxophone to the bass are available for older children. Classes generally run for 30 weeks and range in cost from $265 for introductory lessons to more than $1,000 for more advanced programs.
