Best Millennial Shakespeare

The Bomb-itty of Errors
45 Bleecker Theater
45 Bleecker Street
212-307-4100

Some people prefer their avant-garde Shakespeare adaptations to feature hand puppets, Butoh dance, the delightful melodies of John Cage. But the five guys behind a new "add-rap-tation" of The Comedy of Errors prefer hip-hop, silly wigs, and soul. Purists may wince at the sight of a Hasidic rapper who, a la Flavor Flav, sells a gold chain adorned with an entire gold-plated steering wheel complete with The Club. Shakespearean scholars might even argue against the plausibility of an Adidas-sponsored Sports Nunnery for wayward athletic women. But such gags and rapid-fire rhymes are the ecstatic work of the hilarious, inventive Bomb-itty crew -- Jason Catalano, GQ, Jordan Allen-Dutton, Erik Weiner, and J.A.Q. -- whose hyperactive comedy (complete with a Barry White-inflected slow-jam dedicated to "sweet thang" Luciana) has been the surprise of the season, drawing kids, grown-ups, downtowners, uptowners to the tiny Off Broadway theater. These guys can make Shakespeare's jokes about sex and love seem as current as Lil' Kim, and a lot wittier.
