If last year’s Word Wars doc inspired a passion for showing off your overdeveloped vocabulary, Thursday-night meetings of National Scrabble Association Club No. 56 are for y-o-u. Presided over by former world champion and Word Wars star “G.I.” Joel Sherman (the nickname stands for “gastrointestinal”; Sherman’s stomach problems are as legendary as his devotion to the game), the sessions take place at the tony Honors Bridge Club, and the quality of play matches the environs. Top players such as writer Stefan Fatsis, whose Word Freak introduced Sherman to the world, are frequently in attendance, though don’t worry: Novices are welcomed, too, and paired off appropriately to ensure competitive matches.
