Sullivan's Travels

A north-to-south tour of our favorite cheap eats street.

1. N.Y. Dosas
Washington Square South
(917-710-2092)

This vegan South Asian street cart sells savory crêpes (dosai) and pancakes (uthappam) (99 cents to $5) filled with fresh vegetables and spiced potatoes; the deluxe ($5) comes with spicy soup and coconut chutney.

2. Jamaican Flavors
240 Sullivan Street
(212-254-3856)

A Caribbean carry-out for flaky patties stuffed with everything from jerk chicken to calaloo and saltfish ($1.25 to $2.25), plus deliciously crusty fried chicken sold by the portion ($4.95) or the piece, for a (sort of) light bite.

3. Peanut Butter & Co.
240 Sullivan Street
(212-677-3995)

Come here for the Elvis, an edible homage to the King’s favorite grilled peanut-butter sandwich with banana, honey, and bacon ($7.50). Grab a couple of fudgy peanut-butter brownies ($2.50) for the road.

4. Fuji Sushi
227 Sullivan Street
(212-674-5242)

The Thai owner of this Japanese grocery and premade sushi shop surreptitiously cooks Thai on the side—duck in for a curried-chicken crêpe ($1.50) and coconut-milk-drenched mango sticky rice ($3).

5. Ciao Bella
227 Sullivan Street
(212-505-7100)

For a twist on the typical malted, the worthy version here is made with malted-milk-ball gelato ($4), which gives it a crunchy edge over the competition.

6. Pepe Rosso To Go
149 Sullivan Street
(212-677-4555)

The pasta place that spawned a red-sauce empire, the original Pepe turns tables so fast (and bluntly), the truffle-oiled bresaola panino ($6.95) and lickety-split spaghetti with pesto, potatoes, and string beans ($7.95) count as street food.

7. Joe’s Dairy
156 Sullivan Street
(212-677-8780)

Spectacular fresh or smoked mozzarella makes for spectacular (albeit premade) sandwiches ($4 to $6), accessorized with sun-dried tomatoes or roasted peppers and a splash of good olive oil.

8. Once Upon A Tart
135 Sullivan Street
(212-387-8869)

Weekend afternoons were made for loitering at this quaint Soho institution, but the takeout annex offers the same delicious sweet and savory tarts ($5), sandwiches ($6.50 to $6.75), and strawberry lemonade ($3.75) to go.

9. Melampo Imported Foods
105 Sullivan Street
Even though moody Italian sandwich maestro Alessandro Gualandi’s young understudy seems to be taking on the brunt of the hero-making duties these days, they’re still good, if not quite the same, and make for excellent picnicking at the pocket park next door.

10. Sullivan Street Bakery
73 Sullivan Street
(212-334-9435)

Habit-forming Roman-style pizza by the slice ($1 to $3.75), from the marvelous, minimalist tomato standby to seasonal variations like artichoke, celery root, and champagne grape. For dessert: ricotta and jam tortas, biscotti, and the Italian answer to pumpkin pie.

11. The Yoghurt Place II
71 Sullivan Street
(212-219-3500)

Outlandishly thick Greek-style strained yogurt, served with fresh fruit or a compote of apricots and figs ($2 to $4.25). Plus baklava, fruit-and-nut-stuffed cookies, and savory phyllo pies filled with spinach, chicken, or cheese ($2 to $4).
