Cape Cod
Full-service
resorts are rare but not extinct
From the March 26, 2001 Issue of New York
When New Yorkers think of Cape Cod, they usually picture weeklong summer rentals in weathered houses on Wellfleet's therapist-clogged beaches or the overcrowded sidewalks of Provincetown. There is, however, an escape to the Cape that doesn't require packing your own linens or staying at some funky motel, as Chatham's full-service Wequassett Inn proves. The 104-room resort is a collection of twenty buildings and cottages sprinkled among piney woods and a salt pond on the shores of a small-boat sailing wonderland known as Pleasant Bay. It's filled with islands and deserted beaches, so you can spend an afternoon gunkholing as if you were on a three-week cruise but still get back in time for a round of golf across the street at Cape Cod National, a private course open to hotel guests, or have dinner at either of the inn's two restaurants. And if you tire of the inn's early-to-bed, early-to-rise ethos, Provincetown's honky-tonk nightlife is only 30 miles away.
