Killington, Vermont
New York's hometown slope

From the March 26, 2001 Issue of New York

Killington claims to be a western resort in the East (it's got seven mountains, for instance, and a vertical drop of 3,150 feet, compared with Aspen's 3,267 feet). Well, maybe. But there is one respect in which Killington, at least for New Yorkers, is obviously superior to the West: as a weekend destination. Killington, which is in southern Vermont, is four and a half hours by car from New York and boasts the largest snow-making operation in North America. (They're so confident that if you're dissatisfied with the conditions after one run, they'll give you a voucher to ski another day.) The 87 miles of trails are at the center of a vast, varied, mostly attitude-free city of skiers and boarders, with lodging and restaurants at every price level. We still like the Killington Grand Resort Hotel, and Hemingway's is the best spot for serious dining. And apres-ski, the Wobbly Barn and the Pickle Barrel are packed with revelers.
