Stop and
shop in Mt. Washington Valley
From the March 26, 2001 Issue of New York
If bargain hunting is as close as you come to a sport but the special person in your life isn't happy until he or she is hiking, biking, golfing, fishing, canoeing, or cross-country skiing, then Mt. Washington Valley is your kind of place, and the Cabernet Inn is your kind of bed-and-breakfast. You'll find beautifully decorated rooms, super breakfasts, inviting common areas for relaxing, and award-winning gardens. Best of all are the enthusiastic and hands-on innkeepers, Debbie and Rich Howard; they'll guide shopaholics to the more than 250 outlet stores nearby. The Kancamagus Scenic Highway (Route 112) from Conway through the White Mountain National Forest (one of America's most beautiful roads) leads to inviting hiking trails (many just a half-mile long) that go from the highway past rocky gorges and tumbling waterfalls to scenic mountain overlooks. And if it's a clear day, ascend Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New England, via snow coach, rail, or car. Miles of trails await cross-country skiers, and when it's time to refuel, you'll find plenty of good restaurants. Horsefeathers is great for a quick bite, and Bellini's Ristorante Italiano and Shalimar of India are our favorites for more serious dining. -- SANDY SOULE
