Even if Sun Salutations have become your morning ritual, or you’ve found a new religion in Pilates, there’s nothing wrong with a little old-school calorie burn in the name of cross-training. Speed, an intense cardio workout developed by Equinox trainer Joe Dorr, begins with participants jogging the perimeter of the classroom to pounding hip-hop, followed by a series of running intervals that incorporate full-on sprints, side-to-side shuffles, and harder-than-it-looks back-pedaling at full throttle. According to Dorr’s calculations, of which there are many—he recommends using a heart monitor and a stopwatch—there are 300 to 500 changes of direction in the course of the hour. “Every stop and start feels like you’re doing a squat; every time you change direction it’s like a leg press,” he notes. Even the most sluggish Speed students will burn between 800 and 1,200 calories. Warns Dorr, “There’s no hiding in the back of the class.”
