It’s 7 a.m. and you’re getting ready for a heavy-duty presentation to a client who’s flying in from Tanzania. At 7:15, Junior wakes up with the heaves, and there’s no way you can send him to school. Call Best Domestic Services. Sheila Karr needed two days of emergency baby-sitting for her 6- and 10-year-olds, and none of the usual suspects was available at the last minute. As a skeptical Tudor City resident, she says she was nervous about calling a service for someone she’d never met. Talk about a convert: Karr boasts that Best Domestic supplied her with “absolutely the best baby-sitting experience we ever had.” Advertising executive Monique Almonte of the West Village also swears by the service, which gave her a baby-sitter “with the patience of Job” for her active 6-year-old son. The 24-7 company says it has a database of 10,000 baby-sitters in the tri-state area. It even provides nannies who will travel with the family. Founder Maurice Wingate says before he adds a sitter to the database, he conducts a face-to-face interview and a complete background check, including subcontracting with an outside investigation firm to do criminal-background checks. Average cost is $12 per hour with a four-hour minimum, plus transportation costs and a onetime $25 set-up charge.
