Doughnut Plant
379 Grand Street
212-505-3700

Taste anything from Doughnut Plant once, and you’re hooked. This Lower East Side bakery cooks up the best doughnuts on earth—just ask anyone standing in the line that snakes out the door, waiting to ante up the $1.75-per-piece tariff. Owner Mark Isreal, who moved to this Grand Street storefront last year, took his late grandfather’s basic, no-preservatives recipe and created the food equivalent of a Beanie Baby: Kids love them and must have more. They’re at least twice the size of the chain-store variety, and they come in 35 mouthwatering flavors, which change daily. Recent selections included Valrhona chocolate, vanilla bean, strawberry, pumpkin, passion fruit, pistachio, toasted almond, and one with rose petals and a rosewater glaze. The shop is also quite kid-friendly, with large windows into the buzzing kitchen. Isreal’s artistic father even created a colorful ceramic doughnut sitting area for those who want to savor the sweet in its own space. The only problem: Isreal produces the same number of batches every day, and once the doughnuts are sold out, the store closes. Next up: jelly doughnuts later this year.
