  Above the arcades that blanket the diamond district, countless bench jewelers, setters, and polishers—the “machinery” of the trade—still toil anonymously in snug rabbit warrens. One such craftsman is Maxim Semyonov. Born in Russia, he learned his trade from one of Fabergé’s jewelers. If you’ve lost an earring, he’ll make the mate; if you saw a dazzling one-of-a-kind brooch in a magazine, he’ll copy it. He can transform a costume necklace into the real thing and turn “old stuff” from Grandma into hautes bijoux. Don’t expect a fancy showroom; this is a working jeweler’s studio. The prices, happily, reflect that.
