  Swags, tiebacks, Roman shades, brocades—shopping for window treatments, like choosing a sofa, presents a bewildering array of options, and can frustrate the most patient amateur decorator. But little in this business fazes Ian Gibbs, who, with his third-generation expertise, can steer you through an amazing selection of fabrics, including brands like Pollack, Larsen, and Osborne & Little (at prices below retail), plus groovier choices from Arté, known for its bright geometric prints. (He’ll even sell to-the-trade-only fabrics to nonprofessionals.) Prices start around $20 per yard and go up fast, to more than $250 per yard for a few of the swankiest choices. Low-key service is a big part of the appeal: Bring in a Polaroid or a sketch of the room in question, and Gibbs or his staff will walk you through exactly what you’re looking for and how it can be put together. (Alternatively, they make free house calls.) Fabrication of draperies or shades is extra, but there’s no design fee, and everything is made locally and delivered within four weeks. They do reupholstering, too.
