Deep in his or her plaque-ridden heart, every devout carnivore knows that there’s more to a good steak dinner than just the beef. Side dishes are a crucial component, too, especially those involving toppling little hillocks of crunchy, buttery, heart-stopping potatoes. Our choice for the best steak-and-potato dinner in town is Keith McNally’s Greenwich Village speakeasy joint, Minetta Tavern, where the menu devotes one section to “grillades” and another to “pommes.” The bone-in New York strip is the grillade to get, and for your potato-eating pleasure we suggest a rasher or two of pommes Anna. This old-world calorie bomb is constructed with countless diaphanous layers of butter-drenched potatoes and crisped in the oven like a fine pastry. It’s both elegant to look at and wickedly delicious to eat, even without a hunk of steak on the side.
