The L Word certainly has its fans, but they’re not nearly as devoted as the followers of La MaMa Experimental Theatre’s lesbian drama Room for Cream. A live serial soap opera directed primarily by Brooke O’Harra (and written by a core group of seven) that runs in a series of “episodes” one Saturday a month through the spring, Room for Cream lovingly pokes fun at every last lesbian stereotype. The plot is patently ridiculous, revolving around a coffee shop in the fictional all-queer town of Sappho, Massachusetts, populated by vampires, FBI agents, nuns, radical activists, a New Age transgendered mystic, and regular ol’ poetry-loving lesbians. The cast have become cult stars of a sort—after each show, the audience loiters on the sidewalk, waiting to follow the actors to any number of after-parties at nearby spots like Heathers or Fish Bar.
