Best Soul Party

  • Dig Deeper

Southpaw, 125 Fifth Ave., nr. Sterling Pl., Park Slope; 718-230-0238

Soul-music fanboys D.J. Honky and Mr. Robinson named their monthly party Dig Deeper for a reason. Since 2008, they’ve been tracking down forgotten greats from the past—like James Brown’s backup singer Marva Whitney (a.k.a. “Soul Sister #1”) and the ever-suave Billy Prince of Detroit’s the Precisions—and bringing them to Park Slope’s Southpaw for what is often their first-ever solo New York City performances. The artists may look weathered (many are now in their sixties or seventies), but they’ve lost none of their performing chops, with sets that are infectious enough to break vinyl geeks out of their reverent trances. Shows are usually held the fourth Saturday of each month ($10 in advance, $15 at the door).
