Boardwalk W. nr. Kensington Walk, Coney Island; 718-373-5862
This century-old carousel—the last of two dozen that spun on Coney Island at the turn of the century—gloriously returned last summer after undergoing a six-year restoration process in Ohio. The 50 hand-carved specimens are now whirling in a new home: a pavilion designed by the Rockwell Group. The façade, painted with pastel horses and mounted with retro letters (the intentionally spelled “carousell” glows neon at night), is more The Jetsons than Boardwalk Empire. From April 13, escape the Coney Island fray (and its $30 wristband) with the promise of short lines and a low price: For just three dollars, ride to automated tunes from the Gebruder Bruder Elite Orchestra Apollo organ.
