After taking a tour of the three wooden homes that remain from the Crown Heights village of Weeksville, thought to have been one of the first free black communities in the U.S., visitors can now check out its glass-and-steel cultural center, ten years in the making, which opened this past fall. The two-story hub offers classes on gardening, graffiti, and T-shirt art, while a brand-new gallery hosts exhibits on African art and Brooklyn’s jazz roots, with DJs spinning at packed after-hours openings.
