On an industrial drag beside a 24-hour video store, you’ll find a dizzying selection of frames from vintage carved wood to white lacquer. While a custom wooden 30-by-30-inch is likely to run above $200 elsewhere, Frame It in Brooklyn—which sustains itself on high-volume orders from local hotels and nursing homes—can afford to do the same for $138, including glass and wire. (The 12-person staff turns most orders around in two weeks.) Owner Jerry Greenberg always throws in free hooks, with stories from his days as a stand-up comic to boot.
