Father-son clothing got a lot of attention with the August launch of the line (and Nolita boutique) Alex Mill. Shortly after, to considerably less fanfare, longtime designer of girls’ frocks Kirsten Mogensen opened a similar concept shop, offering comfy dresses (above-the-knee shifts for Mommy, romp-ready mid-shin dresses for the little ones) that are cut and sewn in the Garment District. For the young’uns, Mogensen starts with vintage-inspired shapes—Victorian-style box pleats, smock dresses worthy of Laura Ingalls Wilder—and chooses playful patterns that mix Liberty of London paisley with stripes and solids (from $79 for ages 18 months to 9 years). Her practical sensibility—the finely woven cottons she favors air-dry wrinkle-free after a wash in cold water—attracts Tribeca moms, patrons of the 4th Street Food Co-op next door, and plenty who fall in between.
